STOP: Gun and Knife Crime

Alexander Rose London

'I was boiling inside and looked up to the sky and thought a life had gone for no reason... I just had to do something'

My campaign

Friends and family members have died because of gun and knife crime. I want young people to STOP carrying weapons and think about what else is out there, apart from joining a gang. I’m using what I know best – design - to fight the negative gangster image and I want to inspire others to do something positive too. Everyone can use what they have to do something.

Campaign Highlights

- Getting the support of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Tutu Foundation

- Winning an award from the Body Shop

- Speaking at schools and youth clubs across London

- Watching knives smelted down by the police to make my pendants

- Putting on my event at the Ministry of Sound to promote “Education is the Key”

How you can help

- Buy and wear my STOP T-shirts

- Look out for my “Education is the Key” pendants

- Spread the STOP message

- JOIN MY FACEBOOK GROUP

Hi alex i was wondering if you could help me. becaus i have to do a controlled assessment for citizinship and i have to raise awareness about a citizenship issue and i've decided to do gun and knife crime and was wondering if it would be possible to help you campaign against this issue. I was also wondering if i could maybe help you sell your STOP t-shirts in school and raise funds to go towards the tutu foundation. I was also wondering if you could make a visit to Leytonstone School in East London. Thank you...

APPEAL COURT/pf 24 May 2010 guns...1 A FORMER army sergeant who supplied guns to violent gangsters across Britain has had his minimum jail term slashed by top judges on appeal. Paul Alexander, 54, of Sydney Place, Bath, converted imitation and antique guns at a rented farmhouse in Bardfield Saling, Essex, and sold them to gangsters for between £1,500 and £2,000. He was snared when guns and ammunition seized by Merseyside Police during the investigation into the 2007 murder of 11-year-old Liverpool schoolboy Rhys Jones were traced back to him. He pleaded guilty to possessing weapons and ammunition with intent to endanger life at a hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court last September and was sentenced to indefinite imprisonment for public protection, with a minimum of nine years to serve. Today that was cut to seven years at the Appeal Court in London after lawyers attacked the nine-year minimum as "manifestly excessive". Lord Justice Thomas, sitting with Mr Justice Openshaw and Mr Justice MacDuff, told the court Alexander had served 24 years in the army before he began supplying guns to the criminal underworld. "He purchased a number of non-firing guns and turned them into illegal weapons", he said. "It has helped people kill and maim and bring terror in cities across the United Kingdom." The judge said when police raided the Essex farmhouse in September 2008 they found it to be a "gun factory". He told the court that officers found 80 rifles, four handguns, two stun guns and two machine guns, all ready to be converted, and a drill bit which had left distiguishing marks on ammunition found on Merseyside during the murder investigation. Lord Justice Thomas said guns linked to Alexander had also been used in crimes in Manchester, Birmingham, Derby and Nottingham and that many are still unaccounted for. "It is not known the damage that these will do to society in the future," he added. However, allowing Alexander's appeal, the judge said the court had taken account of sentences imposed in previous cases and the number of injuries caused by Alexander's guns. Cutting his minimum term to seven years, he said nine years was "too severe." However, he concluded: "Those who enter into this trade must realise the death, serious injury and terror they bring into city life. He lived a fantasy life as an amourer. There can be no doubt that this man is extremely dangerous." Once Alexander has served his new, seven-year, minimum term, he will still have to convince the Parole Board the danger he poses to society has passed before he is released. ends

Never give up, I have been doing this for a good while including going into prisons and working with (ex) gang members who want to turn their life around. It is people like you that can and will make a difference. www.glenbanksycp.co.uk
