STOP: Gun and Knife Crime

Alexander Rose London

'I was boiling inside and looked up to the sky and thought a life had gone for no reason... I just had to do something'

My campaign

Friends and family members have died because of gun and knife crime. I want young people to STOP carrying weapons and think about what else is out there, apart from joining a gang. I’m using what I know best – design - to fight the negative gangster image and I want to inspire others to do something positive too. Everyone can use what they have to do something.

Campaign Highlights

- Getting the support of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Tutu Foundation

- Winning an award from the Body Shop

- Speaking at schools and youth clubs across London

- Watching knives smelted down by the police to make my pendants

- Putting on my event at the Ministry of Sound to promote “Education is the Key”

How you can help

- Buy and wear my STOP T-shirts

- Look out for my “Education is the Key” pendants

- Spread the STOP message

I am writing to you to discuss a really important issue – the issue of gun and knife crime, particularly the matter that youth today are involved. We are very concerned about an issue in our local area as it affects everyone, and have taken this opportunity to write to you. People are scared to go out of their houses because they are afraid that they may be victims of gun or knife crime. Now we ask you, is that a way to live?! Surely not! No-one should be afraid of leaving their own homes to go to their local supermarket. We believe that this problem needs to stop now. That is why we are writing to you. Your experience was the first thing that came to our minds. We have conducted both primary and secondary research into this issue and from a survey of 50 people it was shown that, thirty-six people, who all live in Hackney, are afraid that they may become the next victim of knife crime. Because of this, many refuse to leave their houses. But who can blame them? No-one wants to be the next victim of knife crime; but then again, no-one should be in fear of leaving their homes. As the media has an outlook on the knife crime that happens, our survey showed that 50% of the people who filled out the survey, believed the majority, if not everything, that the newspapers say on knife crime. We personally feel very strongly about this issue because we want to be safe outside. We want our parents not to worry so much, because they know that we are safe. At school we are taking the following actions. We are writing to people like yourself to ask if you would take time out of your busy schedule to speak to us on why this is such a problem and what we can do, not only as a school, but also as a community. We are also talking to our fellow classmates about the problem and trying to get permission to put up flyers in the school about knife crime. There are so many problems out there, but we believe that this is the main problem. Why? Because it’s still rising! This problem needs to be solved, not just for the safety of the children, but also for the safety of the parents. We want parents to talk to the younger generation about the problems of gun and knife crime, and how important it is that their children do not take a part in it. We are also writing to the Hackney Council, to ask that more youth clubs be arranged. We believe that this will get the youths off the street and into a sport or activity that they enjoy doing. As a group, we are inspired by your campaign, and as such an important decision maker, we feel it is essential to get you on board if we are to change this and really would like your help in the following ways: - Come to our school and talk about the issue - Send us some of your t-shirts for the promotion of your campaign and the spread of this message If all this is done, then we hope that more youths will listen to the issue and may refuse to take part in the violence, whether it is gun or knife, on the streets. It would be very much appreciated if you could get back to us outlining you thoughts and describing any steps that we could take to spread the message. Please email your thoughts to the following email address: h.enil@hotmail.co.uk Yours sincerely, Henry Enilolobo (bcc: h.enil@hotmail.co.uk) Kacey Wright Lance Ledgister Elizabeth Ude

I come from a rural town, miles apart from inner cities, however a place which can still suffer violence and knife attacks. I myself was a former offender and served a couple of prison terms for wounding. I too believe education is one of the keys in the plight against violence. I am currently in my second year of a social science degree and have founded a community football project in an attempt to prevent youths from making similar mistakes, whether drugs, alcohol, etc, which all can play a pivotal role in future offending. I would like to become involved in this campaign and would be grateful of your support, peace out!

To whom it may concern, My name is Garry Bacon and I the Resident Involvement Officer for Elmbridge Housing Trust, a Registered Social Landlord, based in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. Our catchment are covers the whole Surrey area. At the moment we are currently in the process of developing a Youth Forum which will give our younger residents a greater voice on the issues which affect them. They are often the most neglected group of our customer base and i am passionate about empowering them to make a real change and alter the negative perception that people have of younger people. One of the challenges that I have is trying to convince young people to get involved and one of the ways that I am looking to get round this is by incentivising the Youth Forum meetings and Events which I propose to hold. Younger people are much more likely to get involved if there is something eye catching and interesting to be got or won, and i was wondering whether you could help in some way. I have read about the excellent work that you already do through the , and hope you can help. Along with an anti knife and anti gun crime charity called You Have A Choice (www.yhac.co.uk), we are also putting on an event in April in Molesey, Surrey for the young residents of the borough and have a host of top artists lined up to perform for them. They will also be able to attend workshops highlighting issues such as alcohol and drug abuse, anti social behaviour and young people’s rights. I am currently trying to find sponsors for the giveaways that we hope to hold on the night, and was wondering whether you could contribute in any way, in the form of t-shirts or anything that you can spare for our giveaways. This will hopefully be a very positive experience for socially excluded children who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and we hope to make it as fun as possible for them. It would be greatly appreciated, and of course you could be mentioned in any literature and marketing for the event if you were to become involved. I am also looking for items for future giveaways. Many thanks for your time, and I look forward to your reply. Kind Regards.
