Down with Tuition Fees

James Greenhalgh Staffordshire

'University fees are unfair. Doesn't everyone deserve a free education?'

My campaign

For young people, especially students from a working-middle class background, university fees are a massive deterrent to higher education. Young people shouldn’t have to start their careers already owing money or be put off going to university by the fees. In my opinion, university education should be free for all students in the UK regardless of wealth, social class or personal circumstances; in fact, regardless of anything…

My campaign highlights

- Getting Naomi from Skins to support my campaign and attend a protest

- Meeting David Lammy, the government's Minister for Higher Education

- Pound coin stunt outside parliament, sending pound-sign shaped bubbles over the Houses of Parliament for my photo-call

- Delivering a speech at my event in the House of Commons on Aprils Fools Day

- Delivering my report to the Prime Minister at Downing Street

- Organising a national Anti-Fees protest in Central London

Tuition fees are a joke! Lets face it the majority of university students are going to be the big earners, giving the highest proportion of their salary to the government to spend on pointless projects that benefit no one. By discouraging people from higher education they are, as they should think, loosing revenue. I say stop pointless government schemes, for example the government wasting 3.5 million pounds of taxpayers money on a stupid advertising plan "pledge" pointing out the obvious. Without the government throwing money away and MPs claiming on several houses tuition fees could be reduced to a minimal amount.

I'm happy to see there's a voice about this issue thats making a real dent. I'm just about to graduate this week with £23,000 debt, joy! Ironically i got free education at a private school and i was on a bursary as i have a disabeled parent. So life hasn't been a bed of roses. But now i'm finding not only are we laidend with this debt but now there aren't any jobs anyway! Personally, the only solution at the moment is to move country. Keep up the excellent work, i'm hoping you do so well that everyone who has even been to uni can scrap their repayments!

Hi James,I watched channel 4 and saw your campaign- down with tuition fees.....I think its a fantastic campaign, that is, or will affect millions of students. I am a upcoming journalist (print-based) and me and my 'co-journalists' publish a Uni magazine called 'UNI'D IT!' for many Universities. I was wondering if you would like to have an interview with me, so that you can not only be featured in the magazine but also raise the awareness to students who have not yet heard of the campaign. If your interested, please add me on facebook or email me on [email protected]

I'm going to uni next year and luckily i have the money to pay for it, thanks to my fantastic family, and little bit of my own hard graft. However a lot of my friends were not that lucky and are struggling with fees or purely cant go when they deserve to. This campaign is brilliant and i back you every step of the way. Good Luck!

Hi James, First off can I say how pleased I am that someone is standing up against tuition fees. Secondly I have already accidentally added this comment on ur video link instead of here so apologies for the repetition: I am 22 and have been a student for four years now with a debt of over £22,000!!! As a child from parents who earn just over the amount to not be entitled to bursaries, and with my family consisting of my brother unemployed and my sister also attending university, it is not possible for my parents to pay the tuition fees. On top of having to work 25 hours a week just to buy the basic essentials of food and bills, I am so frustrated that not only do we have to pay tuition fees based on our parent's income even if they can not afford to compensate for this, but to top it off a high interest rate is added to the fees. (Last year I had a statement showing that for one year the interest clocked up was a whopping £200!!! Just for one year) With the prospect looking very bleak for employment when I finish uni next month due to the recession, I am deeply troubled that this interest will be racking up heavily while I am unable to hit the £15,000 per annum to be able to afford to pay off this debt.

Stop wasting every bodies time and come and clean my car, I'll give you an extra five quid!

Harry Brodmann, 14 May 2009 09:20

Hi Everyone Thank you sooo much for all your kind messages - i promise that i am reading all of them, and will respond to every single one of them during the day. People are offering help -which is great, and feel free to e-mail me on at [email protected] if you are able to help. HOWEVER, at the moment we are doing a postcard campaign whereby people send their names and addresses, and we send a postcard letter to your local MP asking them to take the campaign to the Education Minister in Parliament. the only problem is, that WE NEED MORE STAMPS - BUT DONT HAVE LOADS OF CASH! IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO DONATE ANY STAMPS THEN IT WOULD BE AMAZING! Like i say, if you can help in any way, drop me an e-mail :) Also - if you want me/us to send a postcard letter to your MP on your behalf (it would be sooo good for the campaign!), please clik on the link HERE to post ur details: http://ukyouthparliament.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=935ffc4bcff32c9b3b7f14c18&id=0325e5afe4 Thank you

James Greenhalgh, 13 May 2009 15:13

Hello James, i just wanted to say well done and good on you for standing up for what many people and yourself believe in. Im a 24 yr old mother who has always dreamed of becoming a criminal psychologist, however after completing a access course to the course i wish to study in university my partner and i have had to agree that due to the fees we can not afford for me to attend. For just the last two years studying the foundation degree i have built up nearly £6,000 of debt i just can not afford to add to this. This has been heart breaking not only for me but also for my partner who knows how much it means to me. But there is no way that we could support our family financial whilst i was having to pay university fees. I want to wish you all the best in this campaign and i really want u to succeed so that people like me could afford to follow their dreams and do what they want to do. A massive thank you and good luck

Donna Hopkins, 13 May 2009 14:52

In resoponse to Dan's comment at 12:44, wouldn't you agree that tax payers money is better spent on putting people through university? Rather than MP's expenses, "job seekers" allowance, bailing out banks and so on? Keep it up James!
