Down with Tuition Fees

James Greenhalgh Staffordshire

'University fees are unfair. Doesn't everyone deserve a free education?'

My campaign

For young people, especially students from a working-middle class background, university fees are a massive deterrent to higher education. Young people shouldn’t have to start their careers already owing money or be put off going to university by the fees. In my opinion, university education should be free for all students in the UK regardless of wealth, social class or personal circumstances; in fact, regardless of anything…

My campaign highlights

- Getting Naomi from Skins to support my campaign and attend a protest

- Meeting David Lammy, the government's Minister for Higher Education

- Pound coin stunt outside parliament, sending pound-sign shaped bubbles over the Houses of Parliament for my photo-call

- Delivering a speech at my event in the House of Commons on Aprils Fools Day

- Delivering my report to the Prime Minister at Downing Street

- Organising a national Anti-Fees protest in Central London

Hello James, i just wanted to say well done and good on you for standing up for what many people and yourself believe in. Im a 24 yr old mother who has always dreamed of becoming a criminal psychologist, however after completing a access course to the course i wish to study in university my partner and i have had to agree that due to the fees we can not afford for me to attend. For just the last two years studying the foundation degree i have built up nearly £6,000 of debt i just can not afford to add to this. This has been heart breaking not only for me but also for my partner who knows how much it means to me. But there is no way that we could support our family financial whilst i was having to pay university fees. I want to wish you all the best in this campaign and i really want u to succeed so that people like me could afford to follow their dreams and do what they want to do. A massive thank you and good luck

In resoponse to Dan's comment at 12:44, wouldn't you agree that tax payers money is better spent on putting people through university? Rather than MP's expenses, "job seekers" allowance, bailing out banks and so on? Keep it up James!

hi, i just watched the tv show about your campaign and i would like to say i totally agree with what you are doing. I would like to start campaign of my own but i wouldn't know where to start. I want the voting age reduced to 16 due to the fact that if your not in full time education you have to pay tax from that age, i would also like referendums brought in for the big decisions in this country. Would you be able to email me and give me information on how to get my campaign up and running. thankyou.

Hi James, your campaign is in essence full of good intention and correct moral ideas. Having come from a less than privileged background and now studying at university, this is a subject that I feel compelled to comment about. However the arguments within this campaign are unfocused and without correct factual support. Despite focusing on the ideas of educational inequality within the system today and the heavy amounts of debts imposed on students, it seems like more of a rant than a genuine political argument. There seems to be no consideration of the other side of the debate. For example without these fees large amounts of money would not be reinvested into the expansion and improvement of learning facilities across the country. There also needs to be great consideration for the micro economical issues, with fees being far more equitable than then general taxation of the population. This route of funding towards subsidies is an expensive and poorly targeted route to the market...why should non-graduates pay for the degrees of graduates who are on average going to be earning in the higher tier of income?? The likely hood of a system of this kind being abused is also increased, as I am certain the amount of people taking a course on "David Beckham" would inevitably rise with no fees. These are just some of the many parts of this issue that your campaign seems to have failed to deal with. It's not that I don't agree with the ideology you’re proposing, however the most effective method of persuading politicians on issues such as this, is not to shout a load of one-sided remarks through a megaphone with a member of skins at your side! If anything this weakens the position of young people in the eyes of decision makers and the majority of the British public today, showing this age band as irrational and naive. From watching many of the best debaters/ political analysts such as Jermemy Paxmen and Charlie Brooker it is clear that they address both sides of debates and then form a collective logical decision on the issue, maybe you should consider doing the same.; If you really want to make politicians listen, instead of smiling for the cameras and saying “what a good job u’ve done” as they appeared to be doing in the latest episode of battlefront.....

Hey mate Just wanted to say congratulations one what seems a fantastic campaign. Personally, I believe education should be free but also believe its no longer feasible. However, its great to see all the effort you've put into this and especially with regards to opposing the new reform of the tuition fee system. Great work!

Hi I think you have made a really good start on getting your message across to the goverment, I feel it is about time that they listened to the younger generation. Although I do not fall into the same category as I am a mature student and single parent with the same worries of high tuition fees. Good luck with your campaign.

Kelly, 13 May 2009 12:14

heyyyy just watched the show on channel 4 i got so mad especially with the current affairs at the minute that students all over the country regardless of gaining the full tuition fee loan or not are still finding it difficult to adjust to university life, i have just finished my 1st year at uni... in another two years time i will have accumilated a debt of £24,000. the bands scheme is ridiculous, how is a family expected to pay at least £3,000 in tuition fees per year when earning a few thousand pounds extra than some one who gets the full grant? if i knew my money was being spent wisely then i would have lesser of a problem but with the current MP scandal im afraid of my money going towards he refurbishment of an MP's second home!!!!

Brilliant pound sign video, well done. Many thanks for a supportive listening ear, one I'm sure will listen to the future comments of the general public and give an honest reply. I see you going far in your political career, remember to keep and open mind. Keep in touch, and I won't forget my promise.
