Wise men say...

More of our campaigners have their first meetings with their mentors coming up, all of whom make Confucius look about as wise as a scone. Aimee’s buddied up with Mark Farmaner, director of the Burma Campaign; Manpreet’s chewing the fat with David Bowles of the RSPCA; and Big Issue founder John Bird is laying wisdom eggs for Alexander Rose.

And I’ve been getting busy trying to find out a little bit more about some of our lovely campaigners. This week my beady eye fell on Zuhal, all the way over in Baghdad.

Zuhal is a bit different to the other campaigners: she’s the only Battlefront campaigner who isn’t based in the UK; and she is the only person I know who lives in Baghdad. That’s right. Baghdad, as in, Baghdad, Iraq. You might have heard of it… something about a war.

I caught up with her this week to find out a bit more about her life and her campaign: Music For A Change. The results from the interview were pretty startling. When Zuhal’s school got looted and bombed, she and the other students took on the role of teacher to keep one another in an education. But in spite of these dramatic differences between UK and Iraqi life, I found out that Zuhal loves Seinfeld, Amelie, and The Killers. So she’s just like the rest of us (apart from the bit about The Killers).

I’ve posted Zuhal’s interview in a separate blog. Ask her questions and follow her campaign here. She’s waiting to hear what you think.

Big love,

Amber x

Hi Georgia, thanks for your comment. I think it would be a good idea if you interviewed campaigner India Harvey on this issue [http://battlefront.co.uk/campaign/anti-binge-drinking/]. She wants to provide teenagers with alternatives to an alcohol-fuelled culture, so she has some strong opinions on this topic. Post a comment on her page and she can get back to you. I'll tell India to look out for your comment, I hope your story goes well. Amber x

Hi, im researching a story for the Western Independant newspaper at Curtin Univesrity in Western Australia and i was wondering if you guys could answer a few questions for me about teenagers and drugs and alcohol? It would have to be on the record because it may get published but i would love a quote from you about this issue! questions: 1 Do you think because teenagers have part time jobs they are able to fund a drug and alcohol fuelled lifestyle? 2. What is your organisations view on taking drugs and alcohol? 3. Do you think more needs to be done to target teenagers on the effects of drugs and alcohol? 4 Is there anything else you'd like to add? Thanks so much for your time, im looking forward to your reply! Georgia :)
