Manpreet Darroch Birmingham

'Road traffic accidents are the biggest cause of death amongst 15-19 year olds, globally'

My campaign

Road traffic accidents are a major killer of young people, and unless we do something about it the statistics are only going to get worse. I personally know people who’ve been killed in road traffic accidents. The worst thing is that there are easy steps that can be taken to save lives – like not listening to MP3 players when you are crossing the road.

My Campaign highlights

- Meeting Asian ragga star, Apache Indian

- Meeting mentor, David Bowles

- Working with the advertising agency, VCCP, on my campaign logo

- Appearing in a live debate for BBC1’s The Politics Show

- Giving a talk at Gordon Brown’s Chain Reaction event in London

- Getting top photographer, Andy Barter, to support my campaign

How can you help?

- Put my posters and stickers in your local record shops, schools and youth clubs

- Stop listening to MP3 players while you’re crossing the road!

- Find me an unsigned band to make a pop video/ campaign viral with

- Join me in my big stunt coming up next year...

I back this 100% the amount of idiots I've seen nearly get knocked over because there to busy playing with their mp3s is ridiculous and it's always the same thing the DRIVER gets the blame!

AAARRRRGH! My earphones are attacking me! Just a wee problem I have with your car-supremacist campaign, you seem to imply that the victims (pedestrians and cyclists) are at fault, when in fact the real deadly factor is a massive couple of tones of metal being weilded by inattentive and distracted drivers. I don't think it is helpful to point blame (how-ever "proactively" sold), at non-car users, when there is no similar or pre-existing hate campaign against car stereos or in-car music use distracting drivers. Just think of it like this: inattentive person walking along listening to music is struck by SUV rolling along at 30mph with massive stereo blaring - driven by an EQUALLY inattentive driver. Who is at fault? The only difference is that the driver was responsible for a far more destructive and dangerous choice of transport. If it were two people listening to music that bumped into each other, there would have been appologetic plesantries exchanged and they would continue on their way. Cars are the real problem - stop ignoring it!

all i can say is well done for making this campaign, i fully support what you are doing as i also lost someone very close to me through a tragic car accident. it makes me very happy to know that there is someone thinking of these problems and trying their best to resolve them and make people more aware. so many many thanks for all the work and effort you have put into your campaign.

robert starling, 23 October 2009 09:44

Dear all, thank you so much for all your comments and messages of inpiration. I am really grateful that you took the time out to drop me a message and share some words of wisdom about how we can take this campaign futher! Unfortunately, I can't reply individually to each message as this website doesn't allow it. I have seen that there have been several requests for campaign materials and ways in which people can get involved. I can send stuff out to you if you want to, please just email me at [email protected] and I will gladly reply. We are continuing to fight for the cause and make people aware of safer road behaviour and this can only be done with help from people like yourselves. I as Manpreet cannot achieve anything without support from the public and to read your comments strengthens my resolve. Collectively, we can make our roads safer! If you're on facebook please check out http://www.facebook.com/manpreetdarroch?ref=profile#/group.php?gid=33181780641&ref=ts and lets make our country safer! THANK YOU!!

Hi Manpreet, be proud. It s an exhausting job trying to get people to listen and change. I recently won an appeal to change an all black coat, hat, gloves and scarf school uniform policy to allow fluorescent stripes on them at my kid s high school. Teens fall into the highest category for R.T.A s, the policy was unsafe. When my eldest started High school her best mate was run over by a bus. My youngest was hit by a car doin 40mph on the school road. He was hurled down the road like a rag doll. I thought he was dead. The school road does not have a crossing, the pavements are narrow single file areas...very close to speeding traffic doing the national speed limit .... as permitted on our school road. Getting the council to help us has been exhausting, upsetting and fruitless. I d like to take your campaign to yr 6 before they start high school and into High School. Posters and stickers would really help get them to take notice. I ve presented things at school before so it does not daunt me to do this.It might save a life. I m still haunted by my son s accident and he s in the 20% who survive a 40 mph impact. I m not too clever with pc stuff. If you e-mail me I can 4ward address...would like to help your campaign locally, (Shenley and Barnet). Philippa p.s The nurse looking after my son told me her 23 yr old daughter was killed outright crossing the road with her earphones on!!!

Philippa Good RGN, 16 October 2009 13:17

Hi I see where you are coming from I don't all ways wear or Liston 2 music on my walk home but when I do I take out one ear pries the Liston and watch when it was safe cross the road. If more people think and take out their ear preise to make it more safe for all. Hope it goes well and save lives. You can email me to chat more about what you are doing.

Alison, 16 October 2009 11:04

you are really handsome, if you are in the other side of the road,, difficult to concentrate in the traffic lights,, ha ha ha no I'm joking love the campaign

Gabby, 16 October 2009 10:43

I have been watching your campaign on the TV this morning and while I appreciate that many young people die in road accidents, I feel that your energies and almost certainly government funding should be concentrated in areas that will be far more beneficial. I think that while you walk around town hassling innocent members of the public that are wearing earphones, perharps you should consider the fact that your turban will also hinder your hearing. Please do not take this as a racial attack, but I feel that you are contradicting yourself. Members of the public and road users should be responsible for their own safety. I agree people should be made aware of road safety, but the manor in which you address people is not efiicient or benefical, surely a widespread adverising campaign would reach far more members of the public and make them more aware, than approaching them on a one by one manor. The state money in which this campaaign has taken up could surley have been used in a more beneficial way to the people of Birmingham.

Greg, 16 October 2009 10:33

Hi Manpreet I watched your show today and was amazed. I really support your campaign and support you fully. I myself used to cross the road wearing headphones but after wathcing your t'v show I now do not and make sure I cross the road without having music in my ears :). Hope all goes well with your campaign

Misty , 16 October 2009 10:14

I was watching the tele and I saw a certain good looking young man talking. So I decided to stop and pay attention to what was being said: TUNE IN TO TRAFFIC. I'm really please to have taken the time out to discover this campaign. I believe it's quite interesting. And it made me ponder on whether I paid attention to the traffic: I don't ... As a matter of fact this week I was on my way to work and I was crossing the road whilst listening to a song from Jah Cure and I didn't notice my co-worker approaching in her car. Results: I was almost ran over. Keep up the good work Manpreet. I'm behind u 100% Judiana
