Aimee Nathan London
‘400 billion cups of coffee are sold in the world a year. That's billions of cups that we’re wasting, that we’re throwing away.'
I’m campaigning to try to get people to bring their own mugs or thermos flasks to cafes when they want a take-away coffee. Disposable cups are non-recyclable and very bad for the environment. I want to get coffee companies to take responsibility too – by offering discounts if you bring your own mug. Plastic bags are now frowned upon by lots of people – let’s do the same for plastic coffee cups.
- Appearing in the Channel 4 TV series on Wednesday 3rd December
- Putting on a “bring your own mug” stunt with celebrity Jodie Marsh
- Meeting mentors: Mark Farmaner, Nik Done, Fredda Hurwitz and Mark Stephens, and Rene Jorgensen!
- Being interviewed by the Evening Standard, You magazine, and the Jewish Chronicle
- Take your own mug or thermos with you when you buy a coffee
- Ask coffee shops for a discount if you bring your own mug (some of them do offer this)
- Send me pics of you with your take-away mug
- Keep following for news on more stunts that YOU can attend

Hey, I just wanted to say that I love your campaign! It's small steps like taking your own cup for drinks that add together to create a big difference in climate change and stopping litter etc. Coffee shops seem to be on the rise so this is deffiantly needed and its a little quirky and different. I liked the TV show you did and I love 'Da Koffee Kup Krew' video - that should be made into a TV advert! I also LOVED your idea of creating a massive coffee cup out of coffee cups, you could put facts about how much coffee cups damage the enviroment on it. I'm vice-chair of Romsey Youth Council (Romsey's a town in south England) and I'm very interested in enviromental and global issues. Every year our youth council holds a youth conference and this years is on Global issues. Two of our main topics at the event are Litter, Vandalism and recycling, and global warming so your campaign fits in nicely. I was wondering if I could bring your campaign up with the youth council and see if we can give it some publicity at the event - possibly by showing your campaign video or making your campaign part of a topic. Also I was wondering if we would possibly be able to try and campaign for people to take their own mugs to the coffee shops in our area. We have a busy costa coffee shop in the center of the town and some smaller coffee shops locally too. It would depend how the idea went at the conference and with the youth council but it would be great to create a local group to try and get our local stores involved with the campaign. I understand it's your campagn and everything I just think it would be great to expand it as far as possible so please let me know if that would be ok or not. Good luck with your campaign in 2009! Thanks, Amy-Jo [email protected]

As a Starbucks barista from basingstoke, I have seen the amount of takeaway cups thrown away and i didnt really think much about it till watching the programme the other day. I know at Starbucks we give something like 25p of each drink if you bring your own mug. I strongly support your campaign because the waste is unbelievable so by doing this im going to make as many customers as i can aware of this, and try to persuade them to bring there own mugs!! Thank you for showing how much of a problem it is and i hope i can help = ] xxxx

Hi everybody! Thanks so much for all your comments and advice about my campaign. I emailed Starbucks a few weeks ago regarding whether I could work with them in some way to encourage people to bring their own mugs with them to coffee stores however they havnt got back to me yet, so fingers crossed! I will let you know asap how you can all get involved, but in the meantime just spread the word! keep posting comments, tell your friends about the site, if you didnt catch the show you can watch it on 4OD, take your mugs with you etc. Little things when done by a big group of people really do add up and it would be GREAT if you all aim to tell a couple of friends about the campaign - that way word spreads!! Keep commenting suggestions and ideas, and remember to always take your flask with you when you go to grab a quick coffee!! Thanks for all your support, Aimee xxx

Hi Aimee I was lying in Hospital this morning and wouldn't normally catch a programme on day time TV, but you were an impressive young, girl. You shouldn't be nervous... BE PROUD! I fee inspired by your spirit and ethusiasm for what in essence is a very simple idea! I will certainly encourage my friends to join you in this campaign and will endeavour to get my corporate coffee shop to instigate a similar programme in my work place. The very idea that recycling is a good thing is cerainly catching on, but very few seem to be taking up the idea of preventing waste..... the coffee companies will only save money with your idea. No cups to buy and not washing up! genius. I hope you get there full support. I only wish more people in the world were a spirited as you. Good luck and never give up. Best wishes Louise (a very young 32 year old!)

-MOSHI MOSHI- Heya i saw the battlefront show this morning(because i was sick and didnt go college) but any way i think what you putting out there and saying well stop it all together is the greatest idea. i think that you should do this kind of stunt in a few cities in england e.g. you could find the place that sells the most in london coffee and do the coffee stunt their, then find another one in the same city that sell the 2nd largest and do it again i think you should do about 3 times, so the one that sells the most,1st, 2nd and 3rd on days were its busiest. then go to a different city machester for example and do it all over again and do it to quiet a few cities. If you came to leicester i would love to help you and i could get quiet a few people that would help!. I would also like to help you in you campainge and then maybe you would move on after that to reducing some other factor (waste) thats contributing to global warming. Please would you get back to me and tell me a few things i could do to help? thanks and keep up the good work ps the world needs people like you! ^^ xkai out!

Hey aimee i saw your coffee cup campaign on battlefront this morning and think its a great idea :] Nice to see someone else my age who actually cares about the environment.

Hi Aimee, I think it's a genius idea! I'm on the case to spread the word and going out right now to get my own cup!:) Good luck with the campaign, please keep us updated! x
Noémi, 03 December 2008 13:56
Hi Aimee, Just seen your campaign on Channel 4+1 and think it's wonderfull what you're doing. I'm 51 and have used my own flask, on and off, for tea at my local shop. I've never really thought about taking and re-using a cup whereever I go, but from now on I'll certainly try it out. The impact it would have nationwide is incredible, as shown in your programme. There 's only one thing that sprang to mind though. Going from shop to shop would they accept the fact that the purchaser (you, me or whoever) has managed to wash our cups well enough? Hopefully the answer would be YES! If I knew about this campaign before then I would've come and supported you on site. Well done in airing this subject. Good luck in whatever you do.
Steve, 03 December 2008 13:28
Hey, I just watched the channel 4 programme! I wouldn't have known how much waste i produce by buying a coffee every day. I thought i could recycle them. I never knew about the programme or the site. So now i can get involved.. 'you already involved' I thought your campaign was really good. Sian :) x
Sian, 03 December 2008 13:11
Aimee - Fantastic! I just watched the programme and wanted to say excellent work and well done you! I lecture in FE and see the waste especially coffee cups which are left in the student and staff canteen. The staff and students try to recycle within Art and Design and re-use for painting, but you have opened my eyes and I will promote staff and students to use their own mugs. I will bring this to the attention of the student council when I am back in work. Thanks Aimee.
