Such simple ideas can go a long way. Well done for taking this on. From observation people care more about convenience than cost. Do Costa,...

Bring Your Own Coffee Cup

Aimee Nathan London

‘400 billion cups of coffee are sold in the world a year. That's billions of cups that we’re wasting, that we’re throwing away.'

My Campaign

I’m campaigning to try to get people to bring their own mugs or thermos flasks to cafes when they want a take-away coffee. Disposable cups are non-recyclable and very bad for the environment. I want to get coffee companies to take responsibility too – by offering discounts if you bring your own mug. Plastic bags are now frowned upon by lots of people – let’s do the same for plastic coffee cups.

My Campaign Highlights

- Appearing in the Channel 4 TV series on Wednesday 3rd December

- Putting on a “bring your own mug” stunt with celebrity Jodie Marsh

- Meeting mentors: Mark Farmaner, Nik Done, Fredda Hurwitz and Mark Stephens, and Rene Jorgensen!

- Being interviewed by the Evening Standard, You magazine, and the Jewish Chronicle

- Attending an all day brainstorm with the Creative Orchestra agency

- Getting my first coffee shop on board the campaign!

How can you help?

- Take your own mug or thermos with you when you buy a coffee

- Ask coffee shops for a discount if you bring your own mug (some of them do offer this)

- Send me pics of you with your take-away mug

- Keep following for news on more stunts that YOU can attend

hey aimee!!! i thought that your idea was amazing and brilliant!!! I live in Scotland and in my 3rd year at high school. In my high school we use non recyclable cups and your idea has inspired me to do something about it. I am going to ask for a 'bring your own stuff to school day' as this also happens with pasta pots. I am collecting information and hopfully, if i am sucesssful, I should be able to get this up and running. Your are a real inspiration so keep up the good work!!! luv Kayleigh xox

I just bought 3 eco friendly coffee cups at Bed Bath and Beyond. 1 hot cup, and 2 cups for iced drinks. They were $7.99 each. Can't wait to use them!

Hi Aimee Have you seen the KeepCup (http://www.keepcup.com.au/) which is now available in the UK? Worth checking out as these massively help your cause.

Hi Aimee I am writing to you because i am currently in my 3rd year at uni and we are developing a project that supports your campaign to use your own mugs within the uni's costa coffee shop. As a group we are developing the idea that the coffee shop will sell the mugs to the students so each time they buy a coffee they will receive a discount. we are also thinking about developing a discount card for the students within the uni, because the cost of costa coffee is no in student price range. Anyway i hope to hear from you soon to see how your campaign has developed and where you are at with it now. Take care Carly

Hi everyone... I am 3rd year product design student. I am designing a sexy, slick and fashionable coffee cup/flask that will change its interface so the companies can still advertise their company. This will not spoil look of the cup. Does anyone think that because the coffee shops companies will be losing on advertisement if people start to bring their own cups, is one the main reason they are not encouraging people to bring their own cups? Please give you thoughts on that.

Hey, just a suggestion, i love your campaign and am definatly going to buy my own flask to take out with me. i just thought a way to get more people on board would be to design different flasks, by making in a fashion statement, i think more people will get on board. good luck with everything, i think its great! Rachel.

Great stuff aimee. You have great talent, however andys right, your talents should be used chasing local authoritys dumping rubbish all over the world.

Hi Aimee, Ive just seen your campaign on the telly, and just wanted to say congratulations on everything you have achieved so far and good luck with the campaign. I think it is a fantastic idea something that will make a huge difference for the environment and highlight a problem that many people might not even consider thinking of. Also if companies can campaign and achieve success in re-usable plastic bags for grocery shopping why can't this idea be used for other aspects of wastage. I believe Big Big Brown Bags even became a fashion statement! Good luck with everything :) John

watch u on tv this morning, thought it was brilliant, didnt realise the effect coffe cups have and will now be taking my own cup in my bag from now on!! whoop whoop to u chick x

Jenna, 14 October 2009 11:02

Although you present you argument well, you should be looking into the bigger issues, like local authorities send uk rubbish to indonesian islands. The reason?because its to expensive to recycle. recycling also costs jobs-i.e recycling paper means that the forests made to produce trees for paper are no longer needed thus causing UNEMPLOYMENT. Recycling is without doubt the worlds BIGGEST CON EVER. As for landfill,it should be banned and ALL rubbish incinnerated, top scientists have all said incineration is the greenest way to get rid of ALL rubbish.andy

I am watching your project on Channel 4, it's a brilliant Idea. Living in a small town I don't see many people using disposable coffee cups and I wasn't aware of the large number of cups that are used in the big cities. I was especially shocked to learn that the cups can't even be recycled. Keep up the good work, I think that this is a really worthwile campaign.

Hi, I am a 3rd year Product Design student from Liverpool John Moors University. I am really interested in the campaign you are doing and I totally agree with you that people should bring their own cups to coffee shops. At the monument I am working on a project relating to breakfast and working to redesign a coffee cup/flask that will persuade the coffee shops to encourage customers bring their own cups and the design will also attract people to take their own cups with them. 1st of all I hope you can some of my questions for me. • What types problems have you faced to encourage people to bring own cups? • How supportive do you think the coffee shop companies are, for customers to bring their own cups? • Do you think 1 of the main issues is that the companies will lose on advertisement if customers bring their own cups? By companies having there logo, colour on cups and style and design on coffee cups, is a symbol of their trade mark, which encourages other people to go and buy from them. If people start to bring their own cups with them, they will lose those opportunities. What are your views on that? I have a great idea and design that will tackle that issue and coffee shops will want to encourage people to bring their own cups. Thanks hope to hear from you soon.

Dear Aimee, Your campaign is fantastic, so worthwhile and I've really enjoyed following your progress. My name is Lara, I am a freelance filmmaker, representing the UK in the first ever international climate change blogging competition (http://climatechange.thinkaboutit.eu/). As part of the competition I am making videos, which explore and reflect the local side of climate change. The work you're doing is fantastic and an interview with you would make for a great piece. It would also put your campaign on an international stage, as the competition is being followed globally. I would really love to interview you for five minutes and hear more about you, your motivations and the future of your campaign. I look forward to hearing from you, Lara
