Bring Your Own Coffee Cup

Aimee Nathan London

‘400 billion cups of coffee are sold in the world a year. That's billions of cups that we’re wasting, that we’re throwing away.'

My Campaign

I’m campaigning to try to get people to bring their own mugs or thermos flasks to cafes when they want a take-away coffee. Disposable cups are non-recyclable and very bad for the environment. I want to get coffee companies to take responsibility too – by offering discounts if you bring your own mug. Plastic bags are now frowned upon by lots of people – let’s do the same for plastic coffee cups.

My Campaign Highlights

- Appearing in the Channel 4 TV series on Wednesday 3rd December

- Putting on a “bring your own mug” stunt with celebrity Jodie Marsh

- Meeting mentors: Mark Farmaner, Nik Done, Fredda Hurwitz and Mark Stephens, and Rene Jorgensen!

- Being interviewed by the Evening Standard, You magazine, and the Jewish Chronicle

- Attending an all day brainstorm with the Creative Orchestra agency

- Getting my first coffee shop on board the campaign!

How can you help?

- Take your own mug or thermos with you when you buy a coffee

- Ask coffee shops for a discount if you bring your own mug (some of them do offer this)

- Send me pics of you with your take-away mug

- Keep following for news on more stunts that YOU can attend

hey:) im bec and i think your campaign is a great idea. I live in south wales and i just want to know wether you would like me to do a simular stunt as what you and your friends did.I go to a big dance school and also a drama school so getting together a group of people would be quite easy. But if you want to keep the campaign just in london for the minute its fine.email me if i could help thank you for making a difference.byee x

hi aimee, i just watched the battlefront doc of your campaign on coffee cups!!! It was gr8. I am a upcoming journalist in west herts college and me and my co-journalists publish college magazines every month. I was wondering if you would like to be interviewed on your campaign, so that you can be featured in our magazine. I feel by doing this, we can also encourage students to bring their own mugs.If you are interested pls email me so we can arrange a date and time. thank you xx

HEY,I'm ill.... :( well i just watched your campaign Aimee, its so good. I think its a brilliant idea and i'm going to put posters up at my school (because they sell coffee in tchibo cardboard cups) to tell them all to bring their own mugs!! It will be brilliant. And i think were gonna have a design your own mug contest for 'Bringing Your Own Mugs' - but I'm not quite sure yet. Your doing brilliantly. Keep it up and GOOD LUCK!! xxx Liberty xxx

Just want to say that this is a great idea! I have started to take my own coffee mug to starbucks everyday too! Keep up your campaign!

Hi, Your Campaign is a very worthy one and one that some companies already support. Working at the largest coffee company in the country can i just point out that we've been offering a discount to customers who use there own cups for several years currently offering 25p of each drink. When it comes to recycling the problem is to make the cups viable and stop them leaking they have to be lined with a plastic or wax which prevents them being recyclable. Besides which even if they were customers take these drinks out of the shops and dispose of them in public bins so even i fthey were recyclable the problem would still exsist of would the public then take the time to dispose of them where they could be recycled?

Wow Im watching this right now on channel 4. I never realised that throwing away and even useing the coffe cups causes so much damage in other countries aswell..its madness tbh i'm so taking my own cup from now on, though i might feel a bit strange lol! its worth it :) And I'll be spreading the word in my towns own little coffee shop Thanks Aimee

I am just watching your programme on channel four now, and thought about messaging you to say that you are doing a great job about saving the environment. I always use my mugs that my employers provide for the coffee making facilities, rather than getting a drink from from the vending machine, because i think what a waste of paper and plastic.

Marcia Allotey, 20 May 2009 11:46

Hi Glenn, Although i would love to go to Caffe Culture to gain exposure for my campaign I have my last week of school this week and my a-levels which have to take priority unfortunately!! If you are going however it would be great for you to spread the word and tell them about my Battlefront site!!! Thanks, Aimee

aimee , 17 May 2009 12:53

Will you be attending caffe Culture on Wed 20 / or Thu 21 May? This woudl be an ideal platform for exposure of your cause.

Glenn, 16 May 2009 18:53

great news about the cafe in Birmingham! Well done, Aimee!

jo, 21 April 2009 15:36

kevin - great idea sounds good!! the only problem at the moment is trying to get customers to want to support the campaign too and actually bring their mugs because there wont be much impact made unless a substantial number of people demand reductions. as for my brent cross event caroline more info will be coming up shortly :) thats all im gonna say!!

aimee nathan, 15 April 2009 20:04

hi duane id love to be involved in an event in some way unless its already happened? what would it involve? aimee

aimee nathan, 15 April 2009 20:02

Hi Aimee I was wondering when the Brent X event is going to happen? Any more details? I am intrigued!
