Popularity: this is the 41st most popular campaignPolitical education is the foundation to any democracy. The electorate needs some knowledge of all parties in order to make a decision at the ballot box. We talk of a fairer, more proportional system and in May 2011 we are to see a referendum on AV - but just what percentage of the electorate knows what a referendum is, or the subtle differences between AV and the current system? It’s clear that for Britain to be a democracy each voter needs to be able to make their own choice on which party to vote for, and not choose one of the main parties because that is who their parents voted for. In 2001 only 59% of the electorate turned out to the ballot box, a disconnected, apathetic electorate has shown that by voting they don’t think they can make a difference. We must educate the young people today so they can vote tomorrow.
