Holly Shaw
Did you know that 1000 people die every year because of the shortage of organ donors in the UK?
My campaign will raise awareness of organ donation and encourage more people to think, talk and do something about it. By educating people, and clearing up common misconceptions about Organ Donation, I hope to get more people to sign up to the Organ Donor Register and potentially save and transform the lives of others like myself.
In 2005 I went on the kidney transplant waiting list after a sudden illness caused kidney failure. I was kept alive by a dialysis machine which I was attached to 3 times each week, and was put on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. For many others on the waiting list dialysis isn’t an option – for them an organ transplant is a matter of life and death. Waiting was tough! However I have been lucky and recently received my gift of life, but for others this is not always the case as there is still a major shortage of Organ Donors in the UK.
I am determined to keep campaigning and fighting for the people still waiting on the transplant list.

Ithink that instead of having to give concent to donate organs for transplant after death, then complete a form stating that you dont want to have your organs used for transplant... This way, I feel would give life to those waiting for organs in that Doctors wont be hanging around waiting for relatives to make their minds up!! Contrtavertial I know but look at it from a prospective patient.

My mother passed on eight and a half years ago, she had been on the kidney transplant list for longer than i care to remember for exactly this reason. I saw the notes, I live in Spain and im 26 but what can I do to help this project apart from promote on my facebook page. PS obviously all of my family already have donor cards.

Congratulations on the win, and of course the kidney! Good luck with it all - it's going to be a massive boost to those waiting for life saving transplants.

Holly, you are an inspiration. Many people bemoan their misfortunes but you have decided to stand up and be counted. You are advocating for some many people. As Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world." You are doing that and I think that we could all adopt Barack Obama's mantra, "Yes we can" when it comes to making a difference in the world.
