Teenage Suicide

Josh McAuley Solihull

'Teenage suicide is a taboo subject. We need to change that.'

My campaign

I'm running an anti-suicide campaign to create and promote support services for teenagers. I want to promote awareness of the issues surrounding suicide and create a better support system within schools. I feel that the media coverage surrounding teen suicides is often shameful, and from experience I know that the support system in place is inadequate. When someone at my school committed suicide no-one knew how to deal with it.

My Campaign highlights

- Putting a sofa in Birmingham City Centre and asking people to sit and chat

- Meeting my mentor, Jane Powell

- Getting comments from you about this campaign

How can you help?

- Send in ideas of bands and celebrities who might want to support this campaign

- Show your support with comments here or on my Bebo page

- Tell me your stories of how you helped a friend in need

I think its amazing that the campaigners on this website take the initiative to change something, instead of continously complaining about it. There are many taboos in this world, people seem to think that in the 21st Century everything is out in the open, but issues like teenage suicide stays behind closed doors. We need our generation to be educated about the increasing problem of suicide and there should be more people that people, teenagers especially, can turn to if they ever experience suicidal thoughts

Just want to say I support your campaign very much because when I was thirteen I attempted suicide twice and wouldn't have if I have the right kind of support around me at the time. I hope that in future there will be better support for teenagers no matter how hard it is to get them to open up. I think it should maybe taught more about in SE. Good Luck

Hi Paul! Thank you for your message. If you are able, it would be good to encourage your sister to confide in you and your parents and share with you what’s troubling her. If this doesn’t feel comfortable, then Battlefront would like you to know that help is out there to support you and your sister if you would like it. There are many organisations that can help, and here are some contact details. Alternatively you could speak to your GP who could suggest services available. Samaritans Telephone Numbers In the UK dial 08457 90 90 90. In the Republic of Ireland dial 1850 60 90 90. Email: [email protected] Childline: 0800 1111

I heavily support this. I've long since noticed the ignorance towards such a campaign. There are thousands of teenagers affected by this topic and it's something that can scar a lot of people for life. The lack of options to both the victims and those who are the sole area of this campaign is despicable. You have the support of a lot of us, and i'll be pointing people in this direction so they can share their support and wisdom on the subject. Kudos for the valiant attempt and perhaps success.

Hi my littel sister she is 16 and she keeps talking to persons online on msn/facebook/bebo/myspace about that no body love her and whanting to take her own life but every one dose care about her

PAUL WHELER, 05 December 2008 09:44

Hi. Great campaign. It's a serious issue that most people just ignore or overlook. Teenagers need someone easier to talk to rather than having to ring phone lines or talk to parents. back your campaign 100 % good luck (:

Hi, i think that this campagin is absoulty amazing and is something very close to my heart. It's a very difficult to get people to talk about whta it needs to be done. Honnest conversations need to be had and people, ESPECIALLY teenagers need to know that it's okay to talk to someone, thye dont have to go through things on there own. There is a non profit organisation in America called To Wrtie Love On Her Arms that is just amazing and brings this need for conversation and help and blows it up to the extreame. You should check them out, www.twloha.com . They are a story of sucess and i hope that this campagin goes the same way!!!!! Good luck :)

great topic don't really know what to say as it is a topic very close to my heart as a guy very close to me has been there and i know that when your in that mind frame if only there was someone you could call who would be able to say something useful apart from snap out of it or your just attention seaking it would help so much

chloe, 04 December 2008 12:19

i think that people really need to get this issue to be a big one. i know this doesnt make sence but like, some of my friends did some sh because i did, and i really think that this issue is a good one.

ellie , 04 December 2008 10:56

i think this is such a great idea, im behind you all the way! people do really need to realise that this is a major issue and im sure they will soon with this campaign. Good luck (:

Megan, 03 December 2008 12:06

Hey, I just wanted to say this is a really important issue that I think in this country we have a habbit of brushing under the carpet issues of mental health, especially in teenagers, who often need some-one to talk to but don't know where to go or are afraid of stigmatization and being seen as just another 'emo kid desprate for attention'. I think there needs to be more media attention on this subject and more help for teenagers with depression, as this is such a major issue that never really gets delt with. There are loads of teenagers in the uk who exibit symptoms of clinical depression but never get the help they need until it's too late.

Lori, 01 December 2008 14:20

Good cause, mate. We need to break down that taboo barrier. Robyn xxx

Robyn, 26 October 2008 14:24

I don't think this subject is taboo in the sense that domestic violence is which i sense from discussions on the issue. I think people, especially in schools, don't discuss because they feel its not within their remit as teacher or pupil. They don't want the responsibility. We are all responsible.
