Free Newspapers Cost The Earth

James Mummery London

'If we can recycle our waste at home, why shouldn't we recycle what we use on the move? What's the difference?'

My campaign

Over a million free newspapers are distributed in London every day. That's a lot of paper to supply the capital's demand for free news. I want the publishers and the public to be aware of the environmental impact of free newspapers and our collective responsibility to sustain our environment. The time is now to stop talking and start acting on issues that are affecting our environment.

My Campaign highlights

- Meeting the MD of the London Paper – and being offered a column!

- Meeting Guardian journalist, Bibi Van der Zee

- Meeting Global Climate Change campaigner, Iris Andrews

- Going to public speaking workshop with Jack Morton Worldwide

How can you help?

- Join my free newspaper collection team

- Take your free newspapers home with you to recycle – don’t leave them on the tube!

- Send in ideas about an art piece we can do with all the old newspapers

- Show your support by leaving a comment or joining my Facebook group

- Download and read my report on free newspapers and recycling bins at different London tube stations here

i think, your very good for caring about the earth, but i think there's 1 problem about you capainge, what about christmas cards and other trash that cuase troble to the earths eviroment?

I agree but to the extent that everyone should take responcibility for their waste. Its about time that we had simular rules for recyling to Holland. We should be charged for the amount of general waste, with a discount for the amount of recycling we have. This would include free papers. If we were all responsible for our selfves and stop being lazy we could keep the papers as they would be recycled for the paper tomorrow.

Sara G. Lyndel, 03 December 2008 08:54

Hey. I agree that newspapers should be recycled, but issue should be that there should be more ways of recycling in public. I am 100% for free newspapers. I think its much closer to real news than papers that have to exaggerate to sell. I think that the waste is perhaps an acceptable cost of free news. It would be better if we could have it both ways though.

Hi Miriam and the Birmingham Envision team. When i came up to your city at the beginning of the month for an Envision Grad meeting, Andrew mentioned that you were forming a team to tackle the Metro. I am really pleased someone else wants to do something about free newspapers in their area and after xmas i will (after sorting it out with Andrew and Rommel) come up and have a session with you guys to see if i can be of any assistance. email me at [email protected] with the plans for your project so far, i am excited to hear about your plans.

Hi! We really enjoy this blog and the work you're doing is great! We are part of the envision group in Birmingham and are looking forward to discussing this issue with you! :)

Hi James I just wanted to say what a fantastic job you are doing - and with studies alongside too! What great news about Tubelines. I hope it went well. Just to add, I was at Stanmore yesterday (the end of the Jubilee line) and was really pleased to see a recycling collector picking up all the newspapers strewn across the carriages. You should be very proud of yourself for your contribution to this issue

Hi James, just watched the meeting video, some promising leads seem to have come from it. Good luck and keep up the good work!

Nick Groll, 12 November 2008 16:31

Well done, James. You did brilliantly to get this meeting and it sounds like they were very interested in your ideas. Keep up the good work! Jo

I have just seen this campaign and think it is great. Why do we need so many free newspapers that all have the same info in them anyway? I am practically attacked to take one every day and see so many people too scared to say no, who then drop on the floor. Waste of paper and waste of energy printing so many of them. You can always find a spare one on the tube anyway!

Kelly Farrell, 30 October 2008 10:04

The govt reply last week from the e-petition is disappointing. I was in London this week for a rare visit and was accosted several times by these 'freepaper vendors'. Some purposely stood in the path of passers-by in an attempt to force them to accept their 'free gift'. If you walk any distance in London late afternoon/evening you cross several of these vending points, with varying degrees of harrassment. If these papers must be circulated I would much rather see them from a dumb waiter box, as in the case of the Metro. The other issue not addressed is the net effect of cutting down trees, to create more litter, at great environmental cost. It is a bizarre situation and symptomatic of the stressful and damaged society we live in here in the UK. I wish you well with the campaign. Johnny

Great campaign! I agree with you. One thing I notice though is that the newspaper recycle bins are often overflowing (especially in the mornings) so the papers end up spilling out onto the pavement. Maybe the city needs to do more bin rounds.

Hi I was at the WasteWatch event too & thought you were totally inspiring. Your presentation was delivered with confidence and humour. What a great thing you are doing. Good luck.

Malcolm Smith, 03 October 2008 16:24

Thank you Tamsin, i am glad you enjoyed it. I was so nervous before hand but once i got into the swing of things it is very easy to talk about my campaign. Did you enjoy the seminar overall, what was the main thrust of the day because i am still not sure exactly the main reason for the confrence?

Hi James, I saw your presentation at the WasteWatch Annual Conference in London yesterday. It was inspiring and well thought out programme - brilliant! You were also one of the best speakers by far!!
