Condoms For Africa

Troy Kennedy

In Sub-Saharan Africa someone dies from AIDS every 16 seconds.

My campaign

AIDS is a serious problem. In Sub-Saharan Africa someone dies from it every 16 seconds. Getting condoms to Africa is one of the simplest ways of tackling this issue. For my campaign, I want every company and organisation that distributes products to Africa to take condoms along with them. This huge scale distribution could help reduce infection rates and save lives.

My Campaign highlights

-Going to a public speaking workshop with Jack Morton Worldwide

- Speaking about my campaign at a Channel 4 Battlefront event

- Going to Cola Life event and meeting Simon Berry

- Getting so much positive feedback for my campaign from YOU

- Getting the support of Raef from The Apprentice

- Meeting and sharing ideas with fantastic campaigning group, Cola Life

- Planning a big awareness-raising stunt for the campaign

- Interviewed by the Evening Standard

How can you help?

The issue of AIDS in Africa goes beyond the condom talk. I was born in Nigeria and I grew up in that public. Sex is one of those things that you do not pay for and no matter the amount of condom you give out, people out there in 'The Continent' still continue to have unprotected sex. One of the ways I think this campaign will work is to take into conseideration the root of the ills in Africa. Aids in terms of monies and food will forever be a temporary issue if the WEST continues to blow hot and cold with the same breath. Take the last elections in Nigeria for example; the WEST unanimously agreed that they were flawed but that did not stop them from dealing with a Government thay agreed was illegitimate. Such Governments belong to the fingers of the same leprous hand. Corruption in high places is the root and not until the ordinary man gets the basic ammenities, the craze for the natural free commodity called sex will not stop.

Ricky - I think you missed the point. Firstly, am I to assume that you are celebate? And that you think that EVERYONE in Africa should not have sex for enjoyment or even to pro-create?? Alot of the causes of the HIV/AIDS crisis is because lack of money means lack of education about sexual health. If people don't know how to practice safe sex how can we expect them to do it? It's a viscious circle, which leads to further poverty. Have you ever been in a situation you weren't able to help yourself with? Perhaps you think that the NHS is a bad thing, helping people who aren't able to treat themselves. We all rely on people when we need to and I hope that when you need someone to help you with something you may realise that

Rich- I do not feel it is our social responsibilty at all! if they cant stop having sex then why should we bether to supply them with condoms. it is not the responsibilty of this country to help out a Country that is not even attempting to help its self! their government obviously isn't bothered so why should we be! Im sorry but we need to get ourselves out of our problems before we start to spend our hard earned money on other countries! I have always and always will refuse to send any of my money to a charity that helps other countries! maybe before we think of those people we should start campaigning more for our Troops who are out there defending this country so us lot can have freedom of speech!

Troy - fantastic campaign, AIDS is a huge problem in Africa and causes huge barriers for lifting Sub-Saharan countries out of their state of poverty, and so needs to be tackled first and foremost. I work for a charity based in Zambia and Kenya, and we often take quantities of goods to our partner communtities, I may be able to offer help there if you would like it. To Ricky - Yes, this country IS in a position to be helping other countries! By helping failing economies become strong, our economy in turn will be strengthened. We have seen that already in countries like Bangladesh, whose economy is growing at an enormous rate, in turn helping us with imports of clothing and computer equipment. So not only are we in a position to, but we would be helping ourdelves by doing so. Also, do you not feel it is our social responsibility to help those who aren't ABLE to helpthemselves, especially considering that most of the problems have been caused by countries like our invading, pillaging and then abandoning them?

Troy- do you think this County is in a position to be helping other Countries!? I certainly don't! we are in a ressession so we need to be thinking about cutting back on giving AID to other Countries! I am sorry but if a country cant help its self then why should we help them! and if thepeople with AIDs cant manage to keep it in their trousers then I am deffinatley not going to support a campaign to help them have safe sex!

Thanks everyone for the comments! I do appreciate them. To Ricky: that's not the spirit is it? If other people or countries for that matter are in a position to help others they should, surely? To Barry: Thanks for your kind words and neat idea, I'd like to get in contact with you, but I can't get your email address (privacy policy), email me at [email protected] To James: Sorry for the SLOW reply, thanks for the question, though. The Pope unfortunately made those comments, but quickly rescinded of diluted them the next day, if I remember correctly. Many scientific health organisations have said the condom is the most effective way to stop the spread of Aids. The church believes people should stop having sex and stay monogamous, which I'd support, but the fact of the matter is people religious or not are going to have sex, we have to make sure they do it safely. To Jo: our event was postponed it;ll definitely be on in June: stay tuned peeps!

Explain to me why this Country should help a Country that cant even help itself!? I am sorry but it may be harsh but this Country has its own problems and it should be down to us to sort out another Country! we are not a Charity!

Hi Troy. Just wanted to share an idea about how internet providers could be used to get condoms to people in cities across Africa (sorry, this one does exclude rural areas). I have spent a lot of time working in Holland. A couple of years ago, every bar I went into seemed to be displaying racks of postcards with a sealed condom glued to it and a headline "The best anti-virus known to man". Obviously, this advertising campaign was to promote anti-virus software ... but what if we could get the owners of internet cafes etc to push a similar campaign? They could plug their own product but provide a humanitarian message at the same time. Having observed Dutch youngsters pull off the condoms en masse (who said the Dutch aren't optimists?) and discard the postcards, I would suggest a one-postcard per visit to the internet cafe. I could go on but if you're interested at all, please do e-mail me (I won't be offended if you don't). I work with the UK charity sector and hope I might be able to help in some small way. Bless you for your campaign Troy and whether you choose to take on my idea or not, I am and will always be right behind your campaign. Nice one!

Barry, 10 May 2009 19:35

i hear there might be a condom event happening sometime soon... tell us more...

jo, 21 April 2009 10:49

How does it feel knowing that recently the Pope told people in Africa NOT to use condoms. How there are Catholic missionaries who travel over there and preach against them. With the beliefs of the African people being against condoms, it's a near impossible task.

James, 11 April 2009 18:34

Hi Troy, Just read all about your campaign and i think its amazing! Condom suppliea re limited in Africa and i think what your trying to do in your campaign is really good! Would like to chat if thats possible. Speak soon Becca x

Becca, 02 March 2009 06:02

Hi Shelley, thanks for your comment! I think it'd be great to have a chat with you. How's best to get in contact with you?

Troy, 07 January 2009 15:44

Hi Troy I have just been introduced to Simon Schmid who's told me ll about your great campaign. I work for Global Ethics, we sell fantastic condoms, called One condoms (check out www.onedifference.org/uk/condoms/) in the UK to raise fund for HIV/AIDS testing in Africa. I thought it would be good to chat to see how we can help each other out. Please do get in touch. Take care. Shelley
