THE CAMPAIGNER

ANTI SIZE ZERO

Rachel Phipps
Kent

'Who wants to be a size zero, anyway?'

I want to change the focus of the fashion world to represent beauty more realistically.

I'm really interested in fashion but looking at fashion magazines and fashion shows from an early age started to make me feel fat. Looking back I think the only thing that stopped me from becoming anorexic or bulimic was my strong willpower. What happens to other girls who don't have that?

I've set up an alternative online magazine called Inside Out. Instead of diets and super-skinny models it promotes diversity and abolishes negative body images. I want to expand the magazine to make it much bigger. I want to give other people the chance to submit their work.

There's nothing wrong with my body and I'm not going to change myself to fit in. It's certainly not going to stop me getting involved in fashion.

This is a really worthy campaign and I hope it will be successful. I am trying to recover from anorexia, and although I would not say that the whole 'size zero' culture caused my illness, I believe it was a significant reason why I followed a quest to be thin and perfect, like the models and celebrities pictured in magazines. How can I get involved and be a part of this? x x x

Wow, Rahe, aren't you proud of me? I finally worked out the URL to this page! Waay! ;) --*-- I think that everything you are saying is right, and I am proud to be taking even the tiniest little bit of a part in this. Good luck;; you deserve it. xoxo Amy

Hi Rachel, Greetings from Singapore. 2 years ago, a few of us here started a campaign "Food Is Not The Enemy", headed by Project WiTHIN. Our team consists of psychiatrists, counsellors, students, teachers and survivors of eating disorders. For more information about the campaign, do check http://www.projectthin.com/ out. Currently, we are exploring the possibility of having global partners and affiliates to begin a worldwide campaign. We have 2 members in Australia right now trying to start a parallel campaign them. We are very interested in working with you in every way possible, especially to promote and raise awareness about the Inside Out magazine in Singapore. Do email us at [email protected] and we'll see what we can do. Looking forward to a wonderful collaboration! Best regards, Kwan Jin Yao Public Relations Manager
